Overview
Evolution is the official personal information manager for GNOME. It combines e-mail, address book, calendar, task list, and note-taking features. Its user interface and functionality is similar to Microsoft Outlook.
It is necessary to update Evolution to the current release for LDAP access to Kerio Connect (Kerio MailServer).
After doing that, you can proceed to the following steps.
Step By Step Guide
- Click File > New > Address Book.
- In the Type, select the type On LDAP Servers.
- Enter a name that you prefer.
- Enter the address of the server, the port number (the default number is 389) and whether you want to connect securely.
- Define the login method and your username.
- In the account properties for a new address book in Evolution, you will need to specify the authentication (Login method) as Using distinguished name (DN).
- The login will be your primary email address. When querying the address book for the first time, you will be asked to supply a password.
- Click Apply.
- In the Using LDAP tab you can define the following settings:
- Search Base: The search base is the starting point for a directory search. Contact your system administrator for information about the correct settings.
-
Search Scope: The search scope is the breadth of a given search.
- The following options are available:
- One: Searches the Search Base and one entry below it.
- Subtree: Searches the Search Base and all entries below it.
- The following options are available:
-
Search Filter: The search filter can be set here for all the LDAP queries. For example:
- ObjectClass=*: Lists all the objects from the server.
- ObjectClass=User: Lists only the users.
- Filter (|(ObjectClass=User)(ObjectClass=groupOfNames)): Retrieves the User and Contact List objects.
- (&(mail=*)(ObjectClass=*)): Lists the objects associated with the email addresses.
- For the Kerio Connect LDAP you must supply a Search filter of (objectclass=*), and define the Search scope as 'Subtree'.
- The default search base is fn=ContactRoot, which will instruct Kerio MailServer to search in all private, shared, and public address books.
- Download Limit: The maximum number of results for a given search. Most servers refuse to send more than 500 contacts, but you can set the number lower if you want to shorten downloads for very broad searches.
Confirmation
LDAP access in evolution is configured correctly and the e-mail, address book, calendar, task list, and note-taking features are ready to use.
