Renaming Domains in Kerio Connect

Overview

In Kerio Connect, you can rename your domain in the administration interface. This article describes how to rename domains in Kerio Connect, including distributed domains.

Once a domain is renamed, the original name becomes an alias. This ensures that email messages sent to addresses with the original name are always delivered.

new_domain.com

alias.com

old_domain.com

alias.com

The domain configuration does not change after renaming.

Additionally, all users under the old domain will be migrated to the new domain once the process finishes, without requiring additional action from your side.

Important: In case DNS records for the old domain are no longer pointing to the Kerio Connect, the external server won't be able to deliver information about Calendar event change or cancellation.

Prerequisites

Before you start the renaming process:

  • Purchase a domain from your provider and make sure the DNS records are updated. Test the new domain.
  • Make a full backup of your message store before and after the renaming process.

Note: for any future Calendar events it's recommended to remove those important events before domain rename and re-create it after domain rename.

Solution

  1. In the administration interface, go to Configuration > Domains.
  1. Double-click the domain you want to rename.
  1. On the General tab, click Rename.
  1. Click Rename Anyway in the next pop-up window.

  1. Type a new name for the domain and click OK.

    • You can cancel the renaming process before you restart the server by clicking Cancel Rename.
  1. Restart the server.
    • You can restart the server in the administration interface:
      1. Go to Status > System Health.
      2. Click Tasks > Restart Kerio Connect at the bottom of the interface.

Before the restart, all operations are performed using the original name. During the restart, Kerio Connect automatically replaces the original name with the new name in the configuration files.

Renaming Distributed Domains

If you are renaming distributed domains, do the following:

  1. Disconnect all servers.
  2. Rename each domain separately (as described above).
  3. Reconnect the renamed servers to a distributed domain.

Post-Renaming Issues

If you have email filters with addresses of users from a renamed domain, you must change the rules to reflect the new domain name.

If you use Kerio Outlook Connector (Offline Edition), you must empty the cache after the domain is renamed.

Calendar Event owner after domain rename can still edit and remove his/her own events that were created before the domain rename but if there were any attendees on the list this can also lead to inconsistencies and results might vary depending on the external mail servers (Gmail, O365, etc) that are involved.
