FullText and Kerio Index Search Clarifications

Overview

This article provides information regarding the difference between FullText and Kerio Index search engines.

Requirements

Install 3rd party client applications as 'The BAT!' and try to search by BODY of the email.

Note: The Bat! mail client may generate the following entries when the Fulltext Service option is enabled in Debug logs.
{fulltext} Unsupported imap search query: 1:* NOT DELETED

Information

MS Office Outlook is equipped with an indexer that indexes all emails in all folders for a given profile to provide excellent client email search facilities. It does not rely on server-side search for searching emails through Outlook. It doesn't send server search request but instead queries its indexes to find matching emails.

  • Kerio Connect has two search providers FullTextSearch and Kerio Index Search.

    • Kerio Index Search uses a SQL Lite database to store entries related for the following fields (SUBJECT, FROM, TO, CC, SENT, MSGID, ATTACH, BSUBJ, PRIORITY). It doesn't store entries related to the BODY of the email as this is dedicated to FullTextSearch and because the SQL Lite database used was not designed to accommodate huge email bodies. For this reason, a query on email BODY going through this search will always return no results.

    • The bat email client sends IMAP search requests on email BODY that are not compatible with Kerio FullTextSearch, for this reason, the search goes through Kerio Index Search whose indexes have no data on email BODY and so returns no results.

    • If other fields (SUBJECT, TO, etc) are searched using the Bat client then correct results are returned.

Unfortunately, nothing can be changed, because this is how the product was designed.
