Troubleshooting Kerio Connect Server Upgrades

Overview

You have 2 separate options for Upgrading Kerio Connect Server to the Latest Version: either automatically from the web admin UI or manually, through an installer file.

While both upgrade methods entail, at the core, the same backend process, the log files generated by each method will be different. This article is aimed at pinpointing the relevant log files for troubleshooting Kerio Connect upgrades.

Information

Automatic Upgrade

Triggering the Kerio Connect Server upgrade from the web admin GUI leads to the generation of remoteUpgradeLog files. These files are located in the default installation paths of Kerio Connect Server:

  • Windows: C:\Program Files\Kerio\MailServer.

  • Mac: /usr/local/kerio/mailserver.

  • Linux: /opt/kerio/mailserver.

In the above paths, you will be able to find all of the upgrade log files, suffixed with timestamp data allowing you to review in detail how the upgrade went, while also being able to differentiate in between the different remote upgrades triggered throughout time: remoteUpgradeLog-DD-MM-YY-HH-mm-ss.logx.

The remote upgrade logs generally contain all the information that would usually be displayed in the install logs of the host operating system.

Manual Upgrade

When running a manual upgrade through an installation file, the location of the logs will be 100% dependent on the OS and the installation manager in use. The installation/upgrade logs are typically found in the below locations:

  • Windows: C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\kerio-connect.setup.log.

  • MacOS: /var/log/install.log.

  • Linux Debian/Ubuntu: /var/log/dpkg.log.

  • Linux CentOS: /var/log/yum.log

Summary

Each installation method will produce logs in different location, depending on the host operating system. By checking the log files, you will be able to gain insights into any upgrade failures and even pinpoint the root cause for addressing it.
